I’ve reached the point in my Tumblr backlog where everyone is shitting a brick over the new Elementary casting news, re: Lucy Liu as Joan Watson
WHAT THE ACTUAL SHITTING FUCK, TUMBLR
I HAVE A FUCKING NEWSFLASH FOR YOU
GAY REPRESENTATION IN TELEVISION IS NOT ACTUALLY INTRINSICALLY MORE IMPORTANT THAN REPRESENTATION OF POCS OR WOMEN
that kind of reaction might actually be valid if Holmes and Watson were actually canonically in a romantic relationship—and I get that there are reasons (the time period, for instance) that prevents that kind of explicitness, but none of the most recent reinterpretations of Sherlock Holmes have done more than make homoerotic subtext jokes. If Elementary goes in the same direction, guess what: romantic subtext ≠ relationship, I thought we all fucking knew that already. There is literally no way to evaluate whether or not Elementary’s Holmes and Watson will be in a romantic relationship at this point in time.
There are actual, legitimate reasons to side-eye Elementary. But I think it’s important to keep in mind (for example, pertaining to the fact that Joan will not be an army doctor) that Elementary is not actually a remake of BBC’s Sherlock. (Yes, I know what I just linked—and I honestly don’t think they would progress with the project if it were still similar enough to Sherlock to warrant legal action by the BBC.)
… that said, yeah, I do wish that Lucy Liu had been cast for Sherlock rather than John, or that there were a female Sherlock in general, but still, I LIKE JLM SO :/
